What is the book Metamorphosis about?
Metamorphosis is a fairly short book of some 80-odd pages with a completely impossible plot. I mean – what is the likelihood of a man waking up one day and realizing he has metamorphosed into an insect?
Yet, Kafka somehow manages to describe the life of a man who has turned into an insect that will make you forget that a man being an insect is a completely false plot.
It was also very interesting how Kafka described how the man (or the insect) felt upon this realization. On one hand, he feels tied down and stuck but on the other, he feels genuinely free. Free from the expectations, and the responsibility of leading a man’s life in society.
Kafka goes into great detail to describe the metamorphosed man’s relationship with his family and make you feel all he feels watching the world around him.
What made it even more interesting was the short autobiographical account of Kafka’s life before the story in the book began, through which I could draw direct parallels between the life that Kafka lived and the life he wanted to live.
